The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East North Cumbria is offering a three year full time doctoral fellowship hosted by ourselves and the Newcastle University Stroke Research Group.

The main purpose of the studentship is to examine whether artificial intelligence can help to assess suspected stroke patients in an ambulance. Using data from previous clinical studies, this research will analyse interactions between information routinely collected by ambulance practitioners and additional biomarkers. The project will also examine whether the sophisticated integration of these data can enhance the identification of different patient subgroups.

This work addresses an important question for patients, clinicians and healthcare systems. Suspected stroke is a common, time-critical, medical emergency but there are many other conditions which produce the same symptoms.  Consequently patients often end up on the wrong care pathway.

We hope this project will help to build a more efficient clinical care pathway using information immediately available to ambulance practitioners.

Candidates should be trained to Masters level in statistics, health informatics, digital health science or a related field.
